Theory and Practical Tests
There are two elements to passing your UK Driving test:
- Theory Test
- Practical Test
We will guide you with both aspects and provide you with valuable tips and information to help you pass your test.
Theory Test
Practical Test
The Theory Test is divided into two parts:
- A multiple choice test comprising 50 multiple choice questions that cover aspects of the Highway Code. The pass score is min of 43 out of 50 correct within one hour.
- A hazard perception test consisting of a series of video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified. The pass score is 44 out of 75 points.
Notes:
- You need to pass both parts to pass the entire theory test.
- If you fail one part, you fail the entire theory test and will need to retake it.
- Be sure to study the official Highway Code and use practice tests and videos to prepare for both parts of the test. You can practice free online. Ask your instructor for more details.
- Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you'll have to pass the theory test again.
This is when you drive with an examiner
The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) suggests that most people need approximately 45 hours of professional lessons and 22 hours of private practice to learn to drive, although this is an average and the exact amount varies by individual.
As all learners are different, some will pass more quickly than others.
Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions.
The driving part of your test will last approximately 40 minutes.
Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall standard of safe driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises.
You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.
